  • Does your group know any people with AIDS in
    the community?
  • Work out how you can help them and their families.
  • What message can you spread about people with AIDS?

I will start by answering your last question. There is no need for you to move out. If your uncle is so ill, he needs companionship and help, and it is good that his brother's family have decided to look after him.

There is a difference between HIV and AIDS, by the way. HIV is a small germ called a virus which can make the body weak and less able to fight all kinds of sickness. Some people live healthy, productive lives with HIV in their bodies for over 10 years. However, people with HIV in their body often get sick with AIDS, and this is what has happened to your uncle.

A person can catch the HIV virus by having sexual intercourse with someone infected with the virus, or from blood transfusions or used needles or blades. You will not get the virus from sharing plates, towels, toilets, or even sleeping in the same room. There is a small chance you can be infected if you have a cut or sore on your hands, and you touch fresh blood or other body fluids (like urine, stool or vomit) infected with the virus. In this case, protect your hands with a piece of plastic or paper or a big leaf. Wash your hands and dirty bedding and clothes in soapy water. You can use bleach, like Jik, if you want.

And remember, your uncle needs your help and compassion. Do not be afraid.
