Research to support Primary Health Care
The research work at TARSC ranges from participatory and community based research and monitoring to more formal research studies and policy analyses.
Research in support of National health systems TARSC has been implementing research to support a Primary Health Care oriented approach to rebuilding Zimbabwe's health system. In 2009 Training and Research Support Centre (TARSC), worked with the Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) in twenty districts to carry out a situation assessment of PHC in Zimbabwe to inform advocacy and planning for strengthened PHC. The programme built capacities for, implemented and reported on a cross sectional survey of primary health care conditions in sentinel wards in 20 districts of Zimbabwe in March 2009. After a national review meeting in July 2009 identified follow up areas of action in 2010 TARSC has been carrying out follow up support CWGH on the implementation of the pioritised actions.
We provide a first level research training programme for people working at community and district level. We link the skills building in basic research methods with mentoring and support of research. The participants choose the research topics that they identify as important from their work. TARSC has run two such courses for Community Working Group on Health aimed at research on the costs of a 'basket' of essential goods for health. In 2008 TARSC with UZ DCM provided two stage research training to 5 teams from different organisations working on different community problems, and research reports have been produced.
The training programme is in two stages. Stage 1 provides basic skills in research and survey methods, and support to develop research questions, field tools and protocols. The field work is then implemented and a copy of the results sent to TARSC to prepare the materials for the second stage training. In Stage 2 the training course covers analysis and reporting, working with the data generated in the field research. Training is tailored to the needs of the organisations.
Organisations interested in this training programme are invited to contact TARSC at admin@tarsc.org.
