It addresses five main questions:

1. Why we should work with civil society?
2. What is civil society and governance?
3. How does civil society play a role in health systems?
4. Can health systems be more effective by involving civil society?
5. What tools are needed to engage with civil society?

This is not a training course. It is a set of materials that will help you to reflect on issues related to civil society.

Each section consists of a set of questions that are to be discussed. We also provide case studies and links to useful websites. Each section has one or more exercises that you can use to help you think about how the issues in relation to your own work. We encourage you to complete these exercises in group discussions, although they can be used for individual study. Each section contains a list of key words.
