They can be very difficult to scale up, given their intensity, singularity and their dependence on the capabilities of those facilitating them. Where local participatory experiences have been successful, replicating or widening the approach to other areas can involve:

  • scaling out, or increasing the type and quality of participation across a wider spectrum of activities;
  • scaling up, or increasing the number of sites where PRA is used;
  • institutional change, or findings ways in which larger-scale institutions can more regularly interact with smaller ones (NGOs, civic groups) in participatory processes.
